WW II Aniversaries

Yesterday, as I noted, was the 71st Aniversary of the beginning of WW II, when the Nazis invaded Poland and declared war. Today is the Anniversary of the Japanese Unconditional Surrender aboard the USS Missouri in Tohyo Bay 65 years ago. It needs to be recalled that the Japanese had rejected Truman's warnng that the uS had a weapon of unimagiable power that it would use if they did not agree to surrender in late July 1945. The US dropped two atomic bombs, one on August 6 and the second one on August 8, 1945. WW II was not oficially over until the end of 1946, which meant that I born while it was still on, technically, but it took the Japanese less than a month to agree to the surrender once the bombs were used. Hostilities ended on August 14, which was called "VJ Day" for many years. The fighting in Europe had ended on "VE Day", May 8, 1945.

Allowing division background override image color

I found a good interim solution, sine I don't want the text area to obscure the colored parts of the images, I chose the margins accordingly. To control the background color of the text so that it doesn't overwrite the images, I set it and the margins inside a division. Only the text area gets a color and this writes into the portion of the image that was OK to write over. It uses the order that the objects are by default written, the body settings written first, and the div settings write on top of them.

Using Background Clip Art Images

I am experimenting with backgrounds and vector art. I created a business card with inkscape, a vector graphics program, using a blue gradient backgroud with my phone number in white sans serif numerals, my name and street address in black below that and my e-mail addr in green italics alittle indented. I should add a web site and regenerate the PNG file to see if I can get it printed as a card, maybe at Ritz Cameras where I agreed to spend $20 a month in exchange for a deal on a digital camera.

Now, here, I want to add an image of grapes on the vine, (or is that wine?) in the top left corner and another different image in the same style along the bottom and to style this text to fit. These are free clip art files.

I like the effect, generally, but there are some appearent drawbacks:

  • body background-color overites the image
  • It may be possible to make the images transparent.
  • But they may have to be GIF images for that, not JPG.
  • I remember once before encountering the problems with images and background color. It is pretty difficult to match a background color to an image background color so that they look seamless. Why can't the browser set the pixals in the rendered image to the background color if the pixels are white? Let's hope I can make these images transparent.

Experiment with Open Office 2.4 Writer to create a web page

For my hosted site I wrote a page for today that was composed using OOo Writer, which looks like Microsoft Word, but which can output to a web page. I used a background image from the set distributed with OOo, and I uploaded the HTML and the PNG file to my site.
