Knoppix 5 Live Boot

This is Knoppix 5 running in ram off a DVD. It is much more impressive than Ubuntu both in appearence and in what it contains. Knoppix is designed by Klaus Knopper to run from a CD or Dvd as a rescue system without touching the harddrive, in fact I am tempted to build a /home only on the hard drive and not install a Linux, since I have 3 gb of ram. This seems to take advantage of the display capabilities.

Ubuntu 8.06, VB, DVDs

Ubuntu 8.06 running under Virtual Box 3 was a failure. Oh, it ran but the imability to set a US keyboard mapping even after setting locale was a show stopper. I don't think that it was a problem with Ubuntu, but with the way the diskimage was put together. Either there was a bug in that release of Ubuntu, which I doubt, or the Limeys forgot to install the locale support. I tried Ubuntu 8.10 right off the DVD and the problem did not occur. What I noticed was the the live DVD asked for locale info at boot, but not the distro with the "You Can Code" DVD.

I will probably rescue the source code dirs from that DVD, but I lost some small files I made for yeasterday, since VB wouldn't let me save the files from the virtual filesystem to a USB stick. Rather than fight it, I scrubbed the disk image from the Windows partition. The only down I can see so far with Knoppix is that the fonts are not as nice on Ubuntu. That is compsensated somewhat by Knoppix's effective use of the 19" LCD display I have. Other apps than Konsole and Emacs might use better fonts. There are many more apps shipped with this DVD. I ought to see if Knoppix sees a USB stick and get this file onto it.

Yesterday was probably the 56th birthday of an old friend, Debbie Africa, and tommrrow is my 28th wedding anniversary. That means that since the Gegorian reform didn't apply to the year 2000 that Debbie was born on a thursday, if she was born in 1953, and that Bobbi and I were married on a Saturday, which I know to be ture. It also means that Matthew Salem, who will be 28 on November 17, was born on the same Tuesday as this year.
