Relationships between Movements and Pieces

Whole Works, relationships between sections or movements

It should be noted that in the serious repertoire connections extend beyound individual movements or sections of a piece. Sometimes these are significant conncetions between the sections and even between several pieces. The cases where a text, such of the Catholic Mass in Latin, dictates connections, or conscious quoting between one's compositions or those of others are fairly obvious, if interesting. There is another set of connections between movements within a piece that need to be further addressed.

The need for this discussion arrises in part because of the deplorable practice in some commercial radio stations that play a serious repertoire to adopt a "Top-40" formula for their programming where not only do they not play certian kinds of pieces but far worse they do not play complete works, selecting individual movements. It is as if they totally chickened out and set the CD player on random mode. This reminds me of a button that appeared at a computer show back in the beginning: "Random Access is Immoral". That is how I feel about only playing isolated movements.
