| One might think that the discussion of pitch and tonal memory covers harmony, and it does, but still the role of two or more pitches sounded together has such a powerful effect and such an important cultural tradition that it has to be given equal footing with the others. At least unless you have retrained your self to listen exclusively to 20th century atonal music, most of the signals in the music you know as to form and style are based primarily on harmony. A very large number of popular songs and a good deal of the older serious music as well use may five chords. Even Jazz, which does use lots of altered chords and polyharmonic devices is mostly based on the same few chords and their harmony. More on this.
